EN: I honestly have to say the options of products you have when you’re expecting a baby are so f*cking overwhelming, that I get anxieties just by thinking about the stuff we need to get. What do you actually need and what’s the bullish*t they’re just trying to sell? In addition to that I got under a bit of time pressure since our baby shower was coming up last month and we needed to do the online registry so my family and friends in Germany could get us something we actually needed and would be easily delivered in Sydney. In case you’re new here & didn’t know this: I’m German but I’ve bee living in Sydney for over a year now and my partner Matt and I went to Germany for a month over Christmas where we also had our baby shower. But for now, lets get back to the topic: what do you actually need? We opened up a registry at a baby store and simply added the products we wanted online. Our guests received a code and could easily access our registry to get us exactly what we wanted and needed. (Also a great way to avoid getting ugly sh*t.)
When choosing the products, I tried to create a mix between “we really need this” and “aww, this is so cute, lets get that too”. I just didn’t want to make the shopping experience too boring for people. Also, I tried to keep everything in an affordable price range for everyone.
Swaddles are used to wrap your baby tight to help them settle and sleep and reduce awakenings. I found these Aden + Anais Swaddles super cute and they’re 100% cotton.
The Angelcare Bath Support is something we will definitely need. The mesh material allows water to drain easily from the bath support and dry quickly.
A bouncer is basically indispensable and we liked the BabyBjorn Bouncer Bliss Anthracite Cotton. But we’re now leaning more towards a bouncer that rocks the baby automatically. I think it’s super convenient when you need to do a few chores.
Another important thing to have is this Chicco Ear Thermometer Infrared Comfort Quick which is super easy to use.
Although we already got the cot, we didn’t get a music mobile that we can attach to the cot. I saw this Lolli Living Urban Safari Mobile Set and absolutely loved it. The animals are soo cute so I definitely had to add it to our registry.
Something that you not only need but that’s super cute too, is this Elephant Security Blanket. I love elephants so there was no way around it.
I’ve heard a lot about babies loving the sound of a blow dryer which makes them fall asleep very easily. Apparently, it’s very similar to the sound in the uterus which is familiar and comforting. The MyBaby SoundSpa Lullaby Grey has three natural sounds like heartbeat, gentle rain and ocean waves and also a few lullabies.
The Pigeon Newborn Starter Kit contains two 160ml feeding bottles, one 240ml bottle, a training teether, a pacifier and a bottle brush. I think it’s a great starter kit and you don’t need to buy everything separately.
Last but not least, and that’s something you – or at least I – definitely want to have is a nappy bin. A good one. One that’s very well sealed and achieves maximum odours control.
*I’m surely not an expert on this and I’m sure there are still quite a few things that you’ll need, but I think this guide will help you to get started.
DE: Ich muss ganz ehrlich sagen, die Auswahl an Produkten die es gibt wenn man ein Baby erwartet ist ja mal der Knaller – im überwältigen Sinne. So.viel.Zeugs. F*ck, mir graut es jedes Mal davor, wenn ich mich nur mit dem Gedanken befasse, dass ich mich so langsam damit auseinander setzten muss. Was braucht man wirklich und was ist nur Schnick Schnack? Zudem stand meine Baby Party letzten Monat bevor und ich musste zumindest ein paar Sachen online registrieren, die mir Freunde und Familie in Deutschland kaufen konnten und ich dann easy peasy in Sydney per Post bekam. Für die, die neu sind: ich bin Deutsche, lebe seit über einem Jahr in Sydney und war im Dezember für einen Monat zurück in der Heimat, wo auch die Baby Party statt fand. Ein paar Eindrücke von der Party und der Bekanntgabe des Geschlechts könnt ihr übrigens hier finden.
Jedenfalls, zurück zum Thema: was braucht man eigentlich?? Wir haben ein Register bei einem lokalen Babyfachladen angelegt und dann einfach die Produkte, die wir gerne hätten, einfach hinzugefügt. Unsere Gäste bekamen Zugang zu unserem Register und konnten uns so ganz einfach das kaufen, was wir auch wirklich wollten.
Ich habe bei der Auswahl der Produkte ein wenig darauf geachtet, dass ich einen guten Mix hatte aus ‘das brauchen wir’ und ‘ach ist das süß, das könnten wir auch mal haben’. Einfach weil ich dachte, dass unsere Leute auch ein wenig Spass an der Sache haben sollten. Ein zweiter Punkt war die Preisklasse. Ich hab versucht in einer möglichst angemessenen Preisklasse zu bleiben, damit niemanden zu tief ins Portemonnaie greifen muss. Und wer wollte, konnte einfach mehrere Dinge auswählen.
Etwas, was man meiner Meinung nach auch definitiv haben sollte, ist ein Fieberthermometer. Ich hab den Chicco Ear Thermometer Infrared Comfort Quick ausgewählt, weil es super einfach zu nutzen ist.
Wir haben zwar unser Babybett besorgt, allerdings noch kein Musik-Mobile, welches wir and das Bett anbringen konnten. Ich fand das Lolli Living Urban Safari Mobile Set mega süß und hab’s direkt in’s Register aufgenommen.
Etwas, dass man nicht nur braucht sondern noch dazu süß ist, ist diese Elefanten – Schmusedecke. Ich liebe Elefanten und als ich diese Schmusedecke sah, musste ich sie einfach zu unserem Register hinzufügen.
Ich habe ja bereits einiges darüber gelesen, dass Baby’s gerne zu seltsamen Geräuschen wie einem Fön einschlafen. Angeblich hört es sich so ähnlich an, wie im Mutterleib und dies beruhigt sie. Daher habe ich das MyBaby SoundSpa Lullaby Grey ausgewählt. Es macht Sounds wie Herzschlag, milder Regen oder Wellen im Ozean. Außerdem verfügt es über ein paar Schlaflieder, die man ebenfalls zum Einschlafen abspielen kann.

Was ich auch ganz oft gelesen habe: jeder empfiehlt unbedingt einen Windelmülleimer zu besorgen. Einen, der gut versiegelt ist und die Gerüche darin festhält.
*Ich bin kein Profi in dem Thema und es gibt sicherlich noch ein paar Dinge, die ebenfalls unabdinglich sind, aber ich denke dieser Beitrag gibt euch zumindest schon mal einen Einstieg.
